Tom Hanks on typewriters

If you didn’t already know, Tom Hanks collects typewriters. He’s been doing it since the 70s, and he wrote a fantastic piece for The New York Times on why he collects them and why he still uses them (and the post office) every single day.

I particularly like his description of how one typewriter sounds different than another, and how there’s a permanence about what you type on a typewriter that you really don’t get with, say, an e-mail. Great stuff.
